イザヤ書40章
“How Great is our God?”
イザヤ書40章は、バビロン帝国によるエルサレムの陥落が迫っていた時期に書かれたと、多くの学者が認めています。イスラエルの罪に対する神の裁きが迫っていたのです。
イスラエルの状況は絶望的と思われます。このような時に、神はイザヤを通して、民に慰めの言葉を語られました。神は、戦争が終わり、イスラエルの罪が赦され、刑罰に対する裁きが完了する時が来ると宣言されました（1〜2節）。
この預言から700年先の未来に、荒野で主の道を整えるために叫ぶ者の声がする、その時が来るのです（3節）。
マルコ福音書はイザヤの預言の成就を宣言しています。「預言者イザヤの書にこのように書かれている。「見よ。わたしは、わたしの使いをあなたの前に遣わす。彼はあなたの道を備える。荒野で叫ぶ者の声がする。『主の道を用意せよ。主の通られる道をまっすぐにせよ。』」（マルコ1：2〜3、聖書 新改訳2017）です。
この声は、私たちの主イエス・キリストの道を用意したバプテスマのヨハネの声であることは周知のとおりです。
イザヤの預言は最も有名です。「草は枯れ、花は萎れるが、神の言葉は永遠に立つ。」（8節）。実際、預言者イザヤを通して伝えられた神の言葉は実現されました。バプテスマのヨハネの預言はその一例です。このほかにも、神は預言者イザヤを通して、御子イエス・キリストについて多くの御言葉を語られたことを忘れてはなりません。
イエスについての否定できない預言のひとつがあります。「それゆえ、主は自ら、あなたがたに一つのしるしを与えられる。見よ、処女が身ごもっている。そして男の子を産み、その名をインマヌエルと呼ぶ。」（イザヤ7：14）。マタイ1章23節は、この預言の成就を裏付けています。
イザヤ書の中で預言されている多くの出来事は実現しました。なぜなら、預言者イザヤのことば、そして聖書のすべての預言は、人間ではなく、神ご自身が語られたからです。
私たちの神はどれほど偉大な方なのでしょうか。その言葉は永遠に続くだけでなく（8節）、力を持って来られ、その腕で支配されると書かれています（10節）。
しかし、私たちの神は羊飼いのように群れを世話されることも書かれています。「羊飼いのように自分の群れを世話し、子羊を腕に集め、胸に抱いて、幼な子を優しく導く。」（11節）。
神が羊飼いのように自分の群れを世話するということは、神が彼らのあらゆる必要を満たし、世話をし、危険から守ってくれると理解することができます。ヨハネによる福音書10章11節から18節では、私たちの神であるイエスが「良い羊飼い」であることが示されています。イエスは、ご自分の命を羊の群れに捧げることによって、羊の群れを守ってくださいます。イエスが私たちのために命を捨ててくださったことを信じる私たちは、イエスの群れ、つまり教会に属していることを知ります。
私たちの神はどれほど偉大な方なのでしょうか？ 私たちのために命を捨ててくださったのです。それだけでなく、私たちの神は、初めに地球と全宇宙を創造されました（21〜22節）。
私たちの神は、空間と時間を超えて存在するほど偉大な方です。その偉大さゆえに、私たちは神と比べればバッタにもならないのです。神に匹敵するものは何もないのです（25節）。全知全能で、あらゆる点で無限であり、私たちの想像を超える存在である私たちの神は、私たちの名前を知っておられます（26節）。
私たちは、私たちの神の偉大さを完全に知ることも、理解することもできないでしょう。しかし、神は、私たちが神に信頼し、神に頼る者は、「鷲のように翼を広げて立ち上がり・・・走って疲れず・・・歩いて弱らず。」（31節）と宣言しています。イエスを信頼し、頼ることによって、私たちは人間には不可能なことを成し遂げることができるようになるのです。神のもとでは、すべてのことが可能なのです（マタイ19:26）。
父なる神さま、今日の御言葉を感謝します。あなたは、誰も想像できないほど偉大な方です。宇宙の創造主であるあなたは、宇宙そのものよりも偉大でありながら、私たち一人ひとりの名前を知っておられます。私たちは取るに足らない存在に見えるかもしれませんが、あなたは私たちをとても愛しておられ、私たちのために御子イエスを送り、恐ろしくも素晴らしい十字架の上で死なせてくださいました。
父なる神さま、あなたが私たちを愛し、多くのものを捧げてくださったことを感謝します。そして、今日も、そして永遠に私たちを教え、励まし続けるあなたの御言葉に感謝します。
あなたが約束を守ることを示し、証明してくださったので、私たちは励まされています。あなたが私たちを愛していることを私たちは知っています。父なる神さま、ありがとうございます。私たちはあなたを愛しています。In Jesus’ Name we pray, amen.
It is accepted by many scholars that Isaiah 40 was written at a time when the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians was imminent. God’s judgement for Israel’s sin was imminent. Israel’s situation seemed to be hopeless. It is at this time that God spoke words of comfort to His people through Isaiah. God declared that there will be a time when the wars will end, Israel’s sin will be forgiven, because punishment will now be complete (v.1-2). There will be a time, 700 years into the future as we now know it, when a voice will cry in the wilderness to prepare the way of the Lord (v.3). The Gospel of Mark declares the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy “As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, the voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight’” (Mark 1:2-3, ESV). We all know the voice to be that of John the Baptist who prepared the way for our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Isaiah most famously prophesied: “The grass withers, the flowers fades, but the word of God will stand forever” (v.8). Indeed, the Word of God, delivered through the prophet Isaiah did come to pass. The prophecy of John the Baptist is one clear example. Let us not forget that God spoke His word through the Prophet Isaiah about His Son Jesus Christ in many other instances also. One undeniable prophecy about Jesus is: “ Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14, ESV). Matthew 1:23 confirms this Biblical fact. Many events prophesied in the Book of Isaiah has come to pass. Some have not, but we can be sure that they will, because through the prophet Isaiah, and all of the Bible’s prophets, not man, but God Himself has spoken.
How great is our God? Not only will his Word stand forever (v. 8), we read that he comes with might and rules with his arm (v. 10). However, we also read that our God also tends His flock like like a shepherd. “He will tend his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms; he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young”(V. 11). When we read that God will tend His flock like a shepherd, it is understood that God will provide for them their every need, care for them, and keep them safe from danger. In John 10:11-18, we find that Jesus, our God, is the Good Shepherd. He protects His flock by laying down His life for them. For all of us that believes that Jesus laid down His life for us, we know that we are part of His flock, which is His church.
How great is our God? He laid down His life for us. But not only that, our God, in the beginning, also created the earth and the entire universe (v.21-22). Our God is so great that He exists beyond space and time. He is so great that we are not even grasshoppers compared to Him. Nothing can compare to God (v.25). Our God who is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent, limitless in every way and greater than we can ever imagine, knows us by name (v.26). We will never completely know or understand the greatness of our God. However, God declares that those of us who places our trust in Him and depend on Him will “mount up with wings like eagles … run and not be weary … walk and not faint” (v.31). By depending on the trusting in Jesus, He will enable us to accomplish feats that our not humanly possible. However, with God, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26).
Thank You, Father, for today’s Word. You are greater than anyone can possibly imagine. As the Creator of the universe, your are greater than the universe itself, yet you know each and every one of us by name. Although we may seem insignificant, You loved us so much that you sent Your Son Jesus to die for us on the dreaded, yet wonderful Cross. Thank You, Father, for loving us so much that You gave up so much. And thank you for your Word that continues to teach us and encourage us today, and forever. We are encourage because you have demonstrated and proven that You keep your promises. We know that You love us. Thank you, Father. We love You, Father. In Jesus’ Name we pray, amen,
